Monteriggioni Castle and Walls

Built by the Sienese in 1213 as a defensive outpost, this perfectly circular walled village features fourteen imposing square towers. The site is so iconic that Dante Alighieri used it as a metaphor for the giants of hell in his 'Divine Comedy.' Pilgrims can walk along the ancient ramparts for sweeping views of the surrounding Montagnola Senese countryside.
