San Gimignano is famous for its preserved medieval skyline of historic stone towers, earning it UNESCO World Heritage status. Beyond its striking skyline, the hilltop town is celebrated for its historic Piazza della Cisterna, exceptional biblical fresco cycles in the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, and traditional Vernaccia white wine.
Pilgrims walking south on the Via Francigena typically enter San Gimignano through the northern gate, Porta San Matteo. The route leads through the historic center past the central piazzas before exiting through the southern walls toward Colle di Val d'Elsa and Monteriggioni on one of the trail's most scenic stages.
Pilgrims can obtain an official credential stamp at the Town Hall (Palazzo Comunale) on Piazza del Duomo. Other historic places of worship along the route, such as the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta or the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, often provide stamps or welcome walkers during open hours.
The top spiritual site is the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta (the Duomo), famous for its sweeping Old and New Testament frescoes. Walkers should also visit the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, which contains renowned Renaissance frescoes of Saint Augustine, and the quieter Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Ponte near the route.
San Gimignano offers dedicated pilgrim hostel lodging alongside bed and breakfasts, rental apartments, and small hotels within the historic walled center. Rural farm stays (agriturismi) are also located just outside the walls. Booking ahead is highly recommended during peak spring and autumn trekking seasons.
