The Via Francigena Across the Po Valley
After the Alps comes the Po Valley — the long, flat crossing of northern Italy's great plain, following or near the ancient Via Emilia. About 8 stages and ~210 km, from Vercelli's rice plains through Piacenza and Fidenza to Parma. The walking is easy; the challenge is the heat and the distance.
The route
Vercelli: the rice capital of Italy, in a flat plain of paddies and canals. The Basilica di Sant'Andrea is one of the finest early Gothic churches in Italy. The route here is on levees and farm tracks — flat and exposed.
Vercelli → Pavia → Piacenza: long, straight stages along canals and the Po river. Pavia holds the Certosa di Pavia — one of Italy's great Renaissance monasteries, worth a half-day detour. Piacenza is a food city — its prosciutto, Parmigiano-Reggiano and mostarda are legendary.
Piacenza → Fidenza → Parma: along the Via Emilia, the Roman road that still threads the valley. Fidenza's cathedral has famous pilgrim reliefs — including one showing two pilgrims — the route's clearest medieval marker. Parma is the cultural and culinary climax: the Baptistery, the Cathedral (Correggio's dome), and prosciutto and Parmigiano on every plate.
Difficulty
Flat and easy in gradient — but long and hot in summer. The Po Valley in July–August is humid and 30–35°C. Start at dawn, carry 2 L of water, snack through the heat of the day, and don't be proud about taking a midday rest in the shade. Many pilgrims underestimate these stages because they're flat — the heat is the real obstacle.
Food
This is Italy's food heartland. Risotto alla milanese in Vercelli, agnolotti and mostarda in Piacenza, prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano-Reggiano in Parma, and the rich cucina of the Emilia-Romagna plain. Eat where locals eat — a street back from the Via Emilia.
Planning
8 stages of 25–35 km. Use the planner to map Vercelli → Parma, set 25 km/day, and start each day early. Book Parma ahead in summer. From Parma the route climbs into the Apennines — read the Tuscany guide for the next and most scenic stretch.
